LG's new phone might have a screen under the screen
Monday 29th of May 2017 03:25:44 AM

TwitterFacebook

LG's V series of phones is the company's playground for screen-related innovation. Released in 2015, the LG V10 had a secondary screen on top of the main one, and the LG V20 followed up with a larger, better version of the secondary screen.

The upcoming LG V30, however, might go all out with a secondary screen that slides out from under the main screen.

The news come courtesy of Evan Blass, who shared a couple of renders on his Twitter:

Here's how the device was envisioned to look with the secondary display fully extended. [2] pic.twitter.com/HNkZErj7xB

After destroying humans, Google's AlphaGo hangs up its Go gloves
Monday 29th of May 2017 03:09:45 AM

TwitterFacebook

Sorry, human Go players, Google's AlphaGo AI is just out of your league right now.

At the Future of Go Summit event, held in Wuzhen, China from May 23-27, AlphaGo has won every single match, going 3:0 against human Go champion Ke Jie, and sweeping the floor with five human Go masters who teamed up against it.

And just like the biggest champions, AlphaGo is retiring while on top.

According to Demis Hassabis, CEO and co-founder of DeepMind (the Google-owned company that created AlphaGo), the AI has pretty much proven all it needed to in the Go arena. Read more...

The world of convertible laptops just got its thinnest yet.

Asus unveiled the Zenbook Flip S on Monday in a large scale launch event, a day ahead of the larger Computex technology show in Taipei.

The Zenbook Flip S is 10.9mm thin. In comparison, competitors like the HP Spectre x360 come in at 13.8mm, and the Apple MacBook Air measures 17mm.

Hey tech bros, we don't want your gimmicky dating apps
Monday 29th of May 2017 01:30:00 AM

TwitterFacebook

Dating apps are totally out of control. And, we only have tech bros to blame. As an online dater, I've had enough of the never-ending barrage of new, gimmicky dating apps from the tech world. For the love of all that is swipe-able, please make it stop.

Currently, not a single week goes by without the launch of a supposedly quirky dating app claiming to offer something revolutionary and never-before-achieved by the world of online daters.

In the past few months alone, we've seen the release of a "slow" dating app which makes you seduce matches through the art of conversation before you get to see their profile pic.  Read more...

Drunk dude gets the best selfie after being taken home by police
Monday 29th of May 2017 01:09:23 AM

TwitterFacebook

Getting taken home by the police because you've had that massive a night out isn't something you'd ordinarily be proud of, but for one dude it's resulted with the best selfie ever.

A guy from Tasmania, Australia only known by the name of Reece posted a selfie taken by two police officers and himself in bed on Facebook, even though he probably wasn't aware of it at the time.

"So was just looking through my phone and turns out these good c****s took some banger selfies after they took my drunk ass home! Bloody legends," he wrote on Facebook. (FYI, the C-word can be used affectionately in Australia.) Read more...

Call it a perfect circle if you like.

For those who follow fashion, you'd know of Australia's Margaret Zhang, who's had a stunning rise from blogger to a huge name in the world of couture.

Zhang returned to her digital roots, of sorts, by appearing on the cover of Australia's ELLE Magazine that was shot on an iPhone.

Shot during sunset on Bondi Beach by fashion photographer Georges Antoni, it's the first magazine cover in Australia shot with the iPhone 7 Plus' portrait mode, and follows similar work in the U.S. with Billboard magazine back in February.  Read more...

Orangutan climbs out of enclosure while rescuing her baby
Sunday 28th of May 2017 09:20:21 PM

TwitterFacebook

We know that orangutans are great climbers — in fact, it seems like they could just hop out of their enclosure, if they wanted to.

It turns out that Sekara, an orangutan at the Perth Zoo, did just that when her 5-year-old baby Sungai lost grip on some equipment and fell into a garden bed on Sunday, according to WA Today.

Visitors were evacuated from the area for safety, but zoo staff were quick to respond to the incident.

"She seemed really calm, just confused on where to go next. Everyone around was really calm and giving her space as well. The whole incident was probably only 30-40 seconds before staff arrived," Jess McConnell, a witness, told the news outlet. Read more...

Drone riding soccer official skates on air to deliver game ball
Sunday 28th of May 2017 08:18:57 PM

TwitterFacebook

New rule: From now on, all sporting events must begin with an official bringing the game ball to the referee via the magic of drone-style hoverboard vehicles.

That can be the only conclusion after watching the absolutely insane demonstration recorded at the Portuguese Cup Final on Sunday, which started with a man riding on air, Green Goblin style, and landing delicately in front of a ref to deliver the game's soccer ball.

It was flawless. It was weird. It was what every sports event with a ball should have from this very moment on.  Read more...

'Overwatch' Reddit just found the most magically dumb minigame
Sunday 28th of May 2017 03:24:19 PM

TwitterFacebook

Sometimes, the best gaming moments happen because players do things the developers never intended. In this case, I'm pretty sure Blizzard never intended for Roadhog to be a volleyball.

A new post from the Overwatch subreddit, aptly titled "hog ball," depicts a glorious twisting of one hero's unique ability to "boop" other heroes with a concussive blast. Take a bow, Lúcio.

Lúcio's Soundwave — or "boop cannon," as we should all call it — is normally used to push away attacking players, preferably over the ledge of a deadly drop. In Hog Ball, however, the boop cannon has a much simpler purpose: keep the ball in the air. Read more...

Takuma Sato just became the first Asian to win the Indy 500

Takuma Sato, the former Formula One racer who's been driving in the IndyCar series for nearly a decade, won the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, making him the first Asian driver to win the Greatest Spectacle in Racing.

"Unbelievable feeling!" Sato exclaimed as he jumped out of his car in Victory lane to celebrate with his teammates.

These 'Game of Thrones' battle scenes could offer a huge clue about Season 7
Sunday 28th of May 2017 02:16:02 PM

TwitterFacebook

War is coming to Westeros in Game of Thrones Season 7 in a way we've never seen before. The new trailer and preview photos give us a hint of the damage that Daenerys' dragons could do in open combat against the Lannisters, and now that our Khaleesi is in the thick of the action, the producers promise, "there’s a pace and urgency that’s very palpable. This is the end game."

But the Lannisters aren't the only ones causing trouble in Season 7 — as the trailer teases, there's also Euron Greyjoy's armada, which could prove pivotal in the war to come, for one big reason...

We're gonna need a bigger-- no, wait, this one seems fine.

On the anniversary of Harambe's death, the internet grieves with memes
Sunday 28th of May 2017 01:56:10 PM

TwitterFacebook

It's been a year since Harambe was killed, but the internet will never forget.

Last year at this time, a curious toddler wandered into the gorilla's cage at the Cincinnati Zoo, leading zoo officials to then shoot Harambe out of fear of what he might do.

Bored people on the internet — remember, this is the pre-Trump era, when people used to be bored — then took up the gorilla's cause. No one, it should be noted, wanted them to.

Harambe memes flooded the internet, some of them targeting the Cincinnati Zoo. Things reached such an emotional pitch that the Cincinnati Zoo Director, Thane Maynard, had to come out to say that he was "not amused" by all the Harambe memes. Read more...

Queen Elizabeth II reportedly a big fan of her life story in 'The Crown'
Sunday 28th of May 2017 12:38:47 PM

TwitterFacebook

Netflix charts the early reign of Queen Elizabeth II in its biopic series The Crown... and the IRL queen is apparently a fan.

Now, this might simply be wishful thinking brought to life by a welcome rumor. But we'll take it, with an appropriately portioned helping of salt grains, of course.

A "senior royal source" told the U.K. tabloid Sunday Express that Her Majesty has seen all 10 episodes of the Netflix series. She watched it at the urging of her youngest son, Prince Edward, and his wife, Sophie.

"Edward and Sophie love The Crown," the unnamed source said. Read more...

Trump is back from Europe and ready to ruin Twitter again

Even though he was busy destroying postwar alliances and praising autocrats, it was nice to have President Trump away from the United States for a week, especially away from Twitter.

Well, that time has ended. President Trump is back from Europe and back on his phone, with some of his most disturbing (yet properly spelled!) allegations yet.

This time, Trump alleged that credible news sources who were discussing things like Russia and possible corruption, weren't just making up their stories, they were imagining their own sources. Read more...

'Pirates of the Caribbean' box office is a series-low in the U.S.
Sunday 28th of May 2017 11:15:46 AM

TwitterFacebook

The declining popularity around Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean movies continues — in the U.S., at least — with the release of Dead Men Tell No Tales.

The fifth entry in the series is looking at an opening weekend domestic estimate of $62.2 million at the box office. It's good enough for a first-place finish, but it isn't the runaway success Disney was likely hoping for.

Dead Men is pacing toward the series' second-lowest opening in the U.S., after the 2003 originalThe Curse of the Black Pearl opened with $46.6 million domestically, but back then it was also an unproven blockbuster based — seemingly impossibly, at the time — on a theme park ride. Read more...

'Arrow' star proves he's an actual superhuman with a jaw-dropping 'Ninja Warrior' run

Macron finally speaks out about the Trump handshake: "it wasn't innocent"
Sunday 28th of May 2017 09:24:36 AM

Newly elected French President Emmanuel Macron was faced with a nearly insurmountable challenge this week: how to shake President Trump's hand without losing his own.

He succeeded, but just barely. In a new interview with Le Journal du Dimanche, Macron told the paper that the handshake was "a moment of truth."

"My handshake with him, it wasn’t innocent," Macron said. "One must show that you won’t make small concessions, even symbolic ones, but also not over-publicize things, either."

Bollywood's take on Shakespeare is still one of the best adaptations out there
Sunday 28th of May 2017 09:00:00 AM

TwitterFacebook

Dear filmmakers: If you're going to remake an old story, you better damn well do it right.

That isn't a targeted statement so much as a PSA (though it stings freshly of ABC's abominable Dirty Dancing), and a direct product of the fact that I was spoiled in 2006 by Omkara, an Indian film version of Othello.

Omkara was the second Shakespearian endeavor from director Vishal Bhardwaj, who released Maqbool in 2003, based on Macbeth. Both films — and 2014's Haider, based on Hamlet — transpose the Bard's classics to regional India, and Omkara remains a stunning retelling of a world-renown story that is anything but old. 'The Spider-Man: Homecoming' poster was very bad, but consider the other options
Sunday 28th of May 2017 09:00:00 AM

The other day, we finally got our first look at the new Spider-Man: Homecoming movie poster. And it was pretty bad.

I was worried that the new Spider-Man wouldn't feature any people, so this poster is very reassuringpic.twitter.com/BUR77wU3vG

— Edwin Davies (@EdwinJDavies) May 24, 2017

Nothing really makes sense here. The colors are all over the place and Iron Man is on there twice. All the trailers have been electric, and all the previous posters have looked really good, so what happened on this one?

That's right, budget issues. They blew their entire budget on the first few posters and had little to nothing left to spend on this poster. They commissioned six very inexpensive, novice graphic designers and the one they went with was the best one by a mile.  Read more...

'The Simpsons' hilariously shreds Trump and his team on Day 125
Sunday 28th of May 2017 08:52:02 AM

The Simpsons continues to pull zero punches when it comes to the increasingly disastrous presidency of Donald J. Trump.

The animated series latest poke at 45's White House attempts to capture the vibe 125 days in. From the dangling corpses of Steve Bannon, Kellyanne Conway, and Reince Priebus to Veep Mike Pence rubbing the "Vice" off of his nameplate to ... whatever's going on here with Jeff Sessions, "scathing" is the most appropriate descriptor for The Simpsons latest take.

Cartoon Richard Nixon might be the one who sums it up best: "I, uh, came to thank you, Donald. I'm movin' up! Thanks to you, I'm now the 44th best president." Read more...

Snapchat CEO's wedding was so secret we can't even find photos on the internet

Guests were picked up at security-heavy checkpoints and ferried to the Spiegel/Kerr abode in black vans and limos with darkened windows, according to TMZ. A video taken from outside the event shows... precious little. Read more...
